AXE HEAD

Originally identified by the London Museum as a woodman's axe of the pattern in use from the second half of the 9th until the first half of the 13th century. In February 2000 further research by Mr D Edge, Curator, Arms and Armour, Wallace Collection, London indicated the size, shape and square socket indicated that it is, in fact, a military axe of the period of the Battle of Hastings.
It was found in April 1951 in Marley Lane only 200 yards from the site of the Battle of Hastings. The Battle was fought on Saturday, 14th October, 1066. This axe may have been carried in the battle by a soldier of the Saxon Fyrd or Militia led by King Harold 11.
